#021 Accounting application or software… what do I need?
Many business owner clients call 6DT telling us that they absolutely need accounting software.
“Office software? » we answer them. “Are you sure?” »
“Um, yes… why not? »
Office software
Office software, such as SAP Business One, Windows 10 or Excel, must be installed on a computer. The data is stored on your machine or on your own server. The software can perform various operations, process data and run scripts.
The software can be programmed. You can modify the code to give it a specific structure or instructions. Users of desktop software can hire programmers to run programs and modify its features. So much so that a programmer could assign territories to representatives in the Acomba accounting software. This categorization makes it possible to evaluate sales and performance by territory. It could also schedule checks to set up a self-validation system.
This is all very useful. However, programming to modify software can be very costly and time consuming. It is not uncommon for companies to spend $10,000 to $50,000 to adapt their software. It will be necessary to generate a lot of savings in time and processes to make this expense profitable.
Applications
Cloud applications like QuickBooks Online ® make it easier to get work done. And, very often, at a much better price. They are accessible by connecting to an online portal through a browser. Data is stored in the cloud. So you don't need to schedule security backups or pay to store your data. Updates are deployed automatically in Web. You don't have to set up or pay for them like most office software.
Certainly, QuickBooks Online ® does not offer the same range of possibilities as software such as Acomba.
The robustness and depth of features of this QuickBooks Online ® are more than sufficient for thousands of SMEs. QuickBooks Online® is part of a rich ecosystem of cloud applications. Applications in this ecosystem can integrate with each other to provide specialized functionality.
For example, QuickBooks Online ® integrates seamlessly with the CentrixOne customer relationship management (CRM) application. Thanks to this ecosystem, you get feature sets that go well beyond accounting. So you don't have to pay for development or programming. You only have to pay the monthly fees for each application and remove them if they no longer serve you.
At 6DT, we much prefer working with cloud applications. They are very flexible. Neither we nor our customers bear any responsibility for storage or updating. Sometimes it makes more sense to know how to get used to how a web application like QuickBooks Online® works. By being flexible ourselves, we can move our business forward more quickly and at lower cost.
